This contest is now closed. Congratulations to Alexandra B, chosen by Random.org to win my favorite romance ebooks of 2014! Thank you to everyone who entered. I’ll have more things to give away soon :)
Well, back in January I had thoughts of doing a post on my favorite romance reads of the year. But, as you may have noticed, I’m kind of a lousy blogger and I’m particularly daunted by posts that include graphics (e.g., book covers), because I have to re-learn every time how to get the stupid automatic borders off and how to get the images the right size and properly placed so the text flows around them and all of that.
In addition, I was daunted by having to come up with something persuasive and special to say about each book, distilling for you the essence of why it appealed to me and why it ought to appeal to you. Long story short, the January post didn’t happen.
But today I ran across this giveaway post by author Laura K. Curtis in which she just put up the book covers and said “these are some books by some of my favorite positive people.” And I thought, yeah, I think I could do something like that. And with the DABWAHA tournament about to wrap up, and the Rita-finalist announcement mere hours away, it’s even a bit timely!
So! I didn’t read widely enough in 2014 to feel comfortable calling this a “Best of the Year” list, but of the romances I did read, *these are the ones I especially enjoyed (and I’m hoping at least a few of them get recognized in the Rita finals) (edited 3/26 to add: YES! 2 of my 7 – Fool me Twice and His Road Home – were indeed named as finalists for the Rita award):
* If my life depended on picking a single favorite romance read of 2014, it would actually be this free short on Rose Lerner’s site, which follows a pair of middling-ordinary people through the stumbling first weeks of marriage. So there, a free read even if you don’t win my giveaway!
Quick note about one of the books: I bought Another Place in Time for the story by Tamara Allen, which indeed had some of everything I love about her work. (Among other things, she has an excellent sense of exactly how much story a novella will sustain.) The only other story I’ve read so far is the one by KJ Charles, which I also loved. So just on the strength of those two, this anthology made my Faves of 2014 list.
Disclosure of relationships: I follow all these authors on social media and have had some interaction with all of them except for Charles. I’m friendly with most of them, and would actually call Lerner and Allen friends. The thing I feel most conscience-bound about disclosing is that, with the exceptions of Charles and Cole, they’ve all said complimentary things about my own writing. Salt my objectivity with that fact as you wish.
On to the giveaway!
